The hoop size sets the biggest design you can stitch in one go. A 4 by 4 inch field is fine for small monograms, but jacket backs, cushion fronts and quilt blocks need at least 5 by 7 inches, and anything larger saves you from splitting and rehooping designs. When comparing machines, look at the maximum embroidery field the maker states, how many hoops come in the box, how you get your own designs onto the machine (USB, wireless or app) and how many designs and fonts are built in. This guide compares six machines with a stated field of roughly 5 by 7 inches or more, from combination sewing and embroidery machines to an embroidery only model and one multi needle machine for heavier use.
