The Juki MO735 is a combination machine for sewists who want to overlock seams and sew cover hems without owning two machines. It is the only model in the coverstitch group that lists both a 5 thread safety stitch and a 2 and 3 needle coverstitch, plus a chain stitch mode. For a small sewing room, that consolidation is the main attraction.

- Two and three needle coverstitch options are listed.
- A multi function presser foot is listed, cutting down on foot changes.
Good to know
- Combination machines need converting between overlock and coverstitch modes.

Our take
What the listing covers
Juki names five features: 2 and 3 needle bottom coverstitch, a chainstitch mode, a 5 thread safety stitch, chain looper threading described as done in a snap, and a multi function presser foot. The spec table gives 10.5 kg and dimensions of about 30 cm wide, 26 cm deep and 29 cm high.
It does not list the top speed, differential feed, the number of stitch types or what accessories are included.
The 5 thread safety stitch
A 5 thread safety stitch sews a chain stitch seam and an overlock edge side by side in one pass. It is common in ready-to-wear woven garments such as trousers and jackets, where the chain stitch gives a strong seam and the overlock neatens the edge. On a four thread machine you would sew the seam on your sewing machine first.
Converting between modes
Switching from overlocking to coverstitch on a combination machine means changing the threading and disengaging the knife. It takes some practice and time, so plan your sewing in batches: all the seams first, then convert once for all the hems. The snap chain looper threading is aimed at making part of that easier.
Against dedicated cover machines and the b68
The Juki MCS-1500 and Janome CoverPro 2000CPX are dedicated cover machines, so there is no conversion to do, but you would need a separate overlocker. The Bernette b68 Airlock offers air threaded loopers and 2 to 5 thread stitches but does not state a cover hem. Within Juki's range, the MO-80CB is the simpler free arm overlocker.
Who should look elsewhere
Beginners who have never threaded an overlocker may find a combination machine a steep start, because there are more thread paths to learn. Anyone who hems knits in large batches may also prefer a dedicated cover machine that is always set up and ready.
Verdict
Choose the Juki MO735 if you want seams and cover hems from one machine and do not mind converting between them. If you already own an overlocker, a dedicated cover machine such as the Juki MCS-1500 is quicker in use, and if air threading is your priority, look at the Bernette b68 Airlock.
