The Janome CoverPro 2000CPX is a dedicated cover hem machine for people who already sew knits and want professional looking hems on T-shirts, leggings and sportswear. Its distinguishing feature is the free arm: you can slip a sleeve or a narrow leg around it and hem in the round, something many flatbed cover machines make awkward. It does not overlock seams; it hems and topstitches.

Our take

What the listing says it does

Janome lists a slide control to soften or tighten a stitch, a free arm configuration and a work space of 4 by 5.5 inches, described as the largest in its class. It also names a seam tightening system and Tension Level Control, which Janome says prevents puckering.

The listing does not give the number of needles, the top speed or details of the threading aids.

Cover hems and why tension control matters

A cover hem shows two or three parallel rows of stitching on the right side and a looped thread underneath that covers the raw edge. It stretches with the fabric, which is why it is used on almost every bought T-shirt. The common problem at home is a ridge or tunnel between the needle rows on lightweight jersey. A tension system aimed at stopping puckering targets exactly that problem.

Size and practical points

The spec table gives 8 kg, roughly 41 cm wide, 33.5 cm deep and 24 cm high, with metal and plastic construction. EU spare parts availability is listed at 10 years. Because this is a single-purpose machine, you will need a sewing machine or overlocker for the seams themselves.

Against the 1000CPX, MCS-1500 and MO735

Janome's own CoverPro 1000CPX is the portable cover stitch alternative, though its listing has almost no detail. The Juki MCS-1500 adds a chain stitch mode with 3 needles and colour coded threading. The Juki MO735 combines a five thread overlocker with cover stitch, so one machine handles seams and hems, at the cost of converting between modes.

Who it does not suit

If you sew mostly woven cottons and linens, a cover hem machine will sit idle much of the time, since a regular sewing machine hem works well on those. It also cannot replace an overlocker for seam finishing, so a first-time knit sewist on a tight space budget may prefer the Juki MO735.

Verdict

Buy the Janome CoverPro 2000CPX if you sew lots of knitwear and want free arm cover hems with tension control. If you want chain stitch too, the Juki MCS-1500 is the alternative, and if you have no overlocker yet, the Juki MO735 covers seams and hems in one machine.
