The Janome Memory Craft Horizon 8200QCP Special Edition is a domestic machine built around quilting space. Its stated 11 by 4.7 inch work area is the longest in our quilting guides, and this bundle adds an extra wide extension table so a heavy quilt has support on both sides of the needle. It suits quilters who work on double and king size tops at home and want a machine that also handles dressmaking.

In its favour

  • The listing states an 11 by 4.7 inch work space, the longest harp given in this guide for rolling up big quilts.
  • Detachable AcuFeed Flex feeds the top layer as well as the bottom, which helps keep quilt layers aligned.
  • The bonus kit adds an extra wide extension table with cloth guide set and a 2 spool thread stand.

Good to know

  • No stitch regulator is listed, so free motion stitch length depends on your own hand speed.
  • At 15.9 kg it is heavy to move and wants a permanent, sturdy table.

Our take

Workspace and table

Janome gives an 11 inch by 4.7 inch work space, roughly 279 by 119 mm, lit by five ultra bright LEDs. That length decides how much rolled quilt fits under the arm, so it matters more than stitch count for big projects.

The bonus kit in this listing includes an extra wide extension table with a cloth guide set, plus a 2 spool thread stand. Note the listing calls this a bonus kit, so confirm with the seller that it is still supplied.

Feeding and stitching

The detachable AcuFeed Flex system feeds fabric from the top as well as from the feed dogs below, which helps keep a quilt sandwich from shifting. Stitches number 170, including three alphabets and ten one step buttonholes, with a maximum width of 9 mm and length of 5 mm.

Automatic thread cutter, automatic thread tension control, a built-in needle threader, extra high presser foot lift and foot pressure adjustment are all listed. Top speed is 1,000 stitches per minute. Control is via a high resolution LCD touchscreen with four quick selection keys.

Size, weight and what is not stated

The listing weight is 15.9 kg, so this machine wants a permanent spot on a solid table. A semi hard cover is included. The listing does not mention a stitch regulator for free motion quilting, and it does not say whether a knee lifter is included in this bundle.

Against the MC6700P and Skyline S6 AE

The Janome MC6700P offers a 255 by 120 mm passage, AcuFeed Flex wide and a faster stated 1,200 stitches per minute at 11 kg, so it is lighter and quicker but has a slightly shorter harp. The Janome Skyline S6 AE has an 8.25 inch workspace, an AcuFeed dual feed foot and an extra wide table, which suits smaller quilts and lap quilts.

Verdict

Buy the MC8200QCP SE if large quilts are your main project and you want the most stated harp length plus a table in the box. If speed matters more, the Janome MC6700P is worth comparing. If your quilts are mostly lap or single size, the Skyline S6 AE gives a wide table and dual feed foot in a smaller footprint.
