The Juki MO-80CB is a compact free arm overlocker for beginners who want the lower looper made simple. A lever operates the lower looper threader, so the trickiest thread path on the machine becomes a short, guided step. Add differential feed that can be changed while you sew, a free arm for cuffs and a 5 year manufacturer warranty, and it is one of the more reassuring first overlockers on this site.

Our take
The lever lower looper threader
Juki states that threading the lower looper can be done easily by operating a lever. On a conventional overlocker you would thread the lower looper with tweezers through several guides, in the right order, before threading the upper looper. A lever-assisted threader shortens this to a much simpler action, which is welcome every time a thread snaps or you change colour.
Differential feed, foot pressure and knife
Differential feed is listed as adjustable even while sewing, which helps when a seam moves from a single layer of jersey into a thicker band. Juki mentions knits and georgette as fabrics that benefit.
Presser foot pressure can be set for light, medium and heavy fabrics, and the cutting width is adjusted by moving the knife, which Juki says allows both overlock and rolled hem stitching. That confirms rolled hems are part of the machine's range.
Free arm and size
The free arm lets you overlock around sleeves, leg openings and children's clothes without opening a side seam. The machine weighs 6.35 kg, among the lighter beginner overlockers. The spec table oddly lists georgette as the material, which is clearly an error.
The listing does not state how many threads the machine uses or its top speed. One bullet notes that international products may differ from local versions, so check plug, manual language and warranty cover for a UK purchase.
Against the M343D and 9300DX
The Brother M343D also targets lower looper threading with its F.A.S.T. system and includes an instructional DVD, but it does not list a free arm or rolled hem. The Janome 9300DX publishes 3 and 4 thread work, rolled hemming and a speed of 1,500 stitches per minute, though with no threading aid named.
Within Juki's range, the MO735 is the step up for anyone who wants a 5 thread safety stitch and coverstitch in the same body.
Who should look elsewhere
If you need the thread count and speed confirmed before buying, this listing is thin on both. Sewists who want a pre-threaded machine for day one may prefer the Janome 8004D.
Verdict
Choose the Juki MO-80CB if you want a light free arm overlocker with a lever lower looper threader, adjustable differential feed and a long warranty. If a published thread count and speed matter more, the Janome 9300DX is the better documented option, and for a pre-threaded start, the Janome 8004D.
