Our take
Stitch library
Janome lists 270 built-in stitches, including 12 buttonholes, 100 letters, numbers and symbols, and 88 European letters. The lettering is useful for labelling quilts and children's clothes. Twelve buttonhole styles cover shirts, coats, knitwear and decorative uses.
Comfort features
A knee lifter raises the presser foot when you push it with your knee, so both hands stay on the fabric while you pivot. Dressmakers turning collars and quilters stitching in the ditch both benefit. The scissors button trims threads automatically, start/stop allows pedal-free sewing, and foot pressure adjustment helps balance fine and thick fabrics.
A superior needle threader, an easy set bobbin and a bright LED light are also listed.
Accessories and size
The 3 optic magnifiers, at x20, x40 and x60, clip on to enlarge the needle area for detailed work. The wide extension table supports larger pieces, and a hard cover is included. The spec table gives 10.7 kg, Japan as country of origin and dimensions of about 40.6 cm wide, 17.5 cm deep and 30.2 cm high.
The listing does not state sewing space to the right of the needle or the feed type beyond foot pressure.
Against the Pfaff Passport 3.0 and Skyline S6
The Pfaff Passport 3.0 has built-in IDT dual feed and is more portable, but lists 100 stitches. Within Janome, the Skyline S6 lists 196 stitches with a 9 mm width and automatic tension. The 5270QDC offers the largest stitch list of these and the knee lifter.
The Juki HZL-G220 is a further alternative with box feed and 8 automatic buttonholes.
Who should look elsewhere
At 10.7 kg it is not one to carry to classes. If even feeding of slippery fabrics is your main need, the Pfaff's dual feed addresses it more directly.
Verdict
Choose the Janome 5270QDC if you want a feature-rich machine with 270 stitches, 12 buttonholes, thread cutter and knee lifter for dressmaking and quilting at home. If portability and dual feed matter more, the Pfaff Passport 3.0 is better, and for a wider 9 mm stitch, the Janome Skyline S6.
