Our take
Sewing and embroidery content
Singer lists 250 sewing stitches with 401 stitch applications, 150 embroidery designs and 10 fonts. Mirror imaging is included, and the endless hoop capability lets you sew continuous borders by re-hooping in line, useful for quilt edges and curtain hems.
Time-saving features
Several practical features are stated: an automatic needle threader, a built-in thread cutter, a top drop-in bobbin, a tie-off button and a reverse button. A speed slider and start/stop button let you sew without the foot pedal. Sewing speed is listed at up to 800 stitches per minute and embroidery at 450.
This is one of the few machines in the embroidery group that clearly states a thread cutter, which saves a lot of trimming when you switch colours.
What comes in the box
Included accessories are listed in detail: all-purpose, decorative, zipper, blind hem and buttonhole feet, an embroidery and darning foot, a 170 x 100 mm hoop, three Class 15 bobbins, a quilting guide, a thread net, a stylus and the usual small tools.
mySewnet Wi-Fi in use
With Wi-Fi you can send embroidery designs to the machine wirelessly and track progress through app notifications. That means you can leave a long design running and get an alert when a colour change is due.
Against the PE900 and F540E
The Brother PE900 is embroidery only but has a 5 x 7 inch hoop. The Brother Innov-is F540E has a larger 180 x 130 mm field. The SE9180's 170 x 100 mm hoop sits between them, with a much bigger screen and clearer sewing features than either. Within Singer's range, the SE9185 lists a 5 x 7 inch field.
For anyone who mostly embroiders names and small motifs and also sews clothes, the SE9180's balance of features and low weight makes it easy to keep on a desk and move when the table is needed for something else.
Verdict
Pick the Singer SE9180 if you want a light sewing and embroidery machine with a big touchscreen, thread cutter and Wi-Fi. If hoop size matters more, the Brother Innov-is F540E or Singer SE9185 give more room, and if you only want to embroider, the Brother PE900.
