The Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9480QC is aimed at quilters who do a lot of free motion and ruler work. Its A.S.R. (Accurate Stitch Regulator) is the feature that sets it apart: it adjusts stitching so stitch length stays consistent while you move the quilt by hand, and it comes with a ruler work foot. Add a detachable AcuFeed Flex system and 400 stitches, and it covers both piecing and quilting.

Our take

Stitch regulation explained

In free motion quilting, you drop the feed dogs and move the fabric yourself. Move too fast and stitches become long; too slowly and they bunch up. A stitch regulator senses fabric movement and matches needle speed to it, so stitches stay even. For beginners to free motion, it shortens the learning curve considerably.

The included ruler work foot lets you guide the needle along acrylic quilting rulers for straight lines, curves and echo quilting.

Feed and plates

The detachable AcuFeed Flex layered fabric feeding system drives the top layer for straight-line quilting and matching seams. Janome lists a professional grade HP-2 foot and needle plate, with three plates included, to support precise piecing.

Stitches and quilting tools

Janome lists 400 stitches including 4 alphabets, with stitch tapering and Mirage stitch for decorative effects. A locking on and off button for the start of quilt stitches, a floating mode for detail work, and dials for fine tuning width and length are also listed. AcuSpark 2, a QR code app, offers learning and support, and Stitch Composer PC software is mentioned.

Size and support

The spec table gives 13.7 kg, an aluminium material, Taiwan as country of origin and 10 years of EU spare part availability. The listing does not state harp space, so compare it with the MC6700P's published 255 mm if space is a deciding factor.

Against the MC6700P and Continental M8

The Janome MC6700P lists a 255 mm harp, AcuFeed Flex and 200 stitches, but no stitch regulator. The Janome Continental M8 lists 450 stitches and A.S.R. too, at the top of the range. The MC9480QC sits between them.

Verdict

Choose the Janome MC9480QC if you want stitch regulation, a ruler work foot and AcuFeed Flex for free motion and ruler quilting. If you mainly quilt in straight lines and want a stated wide harp, the Janome MC6700P is the alternative, and the Continental M8 offers more stitches at the top of the range.
