The Janome Skyline S6 Anniversary Edition is a computerised sewing and quilting machine for people who want more room under the arm without moving to a flagship model. The 8.25 by 4.7 inch workspace to the right of the needle is the reason to choose it, and the listing pairs it with 196 stitches, 10 one-step buttonholes and an automatic thread cutter, so it handles garments as well as quilts.

Our take

What Janome lists

The bullets give an 8.25 by 4.7 inch workspace, about 210 by 119 mm, and 196 built-in stitches including 10 one-step buttonholes. The text also mentions intuitive stitch selection and an automatic thread cutter.

The spec table lists 14.5 kg, metal and plastic construction and dimensions of about 48.3 cm wide, 23.5 cm deep and 31.8 cm high. The warranty is quoted as 25 years limited on mechanical parts, 2 years on electrical parts and 1 year on labour.

Workspace in practice

A wider space to the right of the needle lets you roll a quilt and push it through without bunching it against the machine body. For a lap or single bed quilt, the difference from a standard domestic machine is noticeable, especially when quilting the centre rows where the bulk is greatest.

The 4.7 inch height also helps with thick sandwiches and bulky home decor items such as padded cushions.

Stitches and buttonholes

With 196 stitches you get utility, decorative and quilting stitches. Ten one-step buttonholes mean this is not just a quilting machine but a capable dressmaking machine too. The automatic thread cutter speeds up chain piecing and garment seams.

What the listing leaves out

The listing for this edition does not describe the feed system, stitch width, needle threader or included feet. The standard Skyline S6, also on this site, lists a 9 mm stitch width, 91 needle positions and auto tension, so it is worth checking with Janome whether the Anniversary Edition shares those details.

Against the S3 AE and MC6700P

The Skyline S3 AE shares the 8.25 by 4.7 inch workspace but has 120 stitches and lists a 7-piece feed and speed slider at a lighter 8.39 kg. The Janome MC6700P offers a 255 mm harp, AcuFeed Flex and 1,200 stitches per minute for more serious quilting.

Verdict

Buy the Janome Skyline S6 AE if you want an extra-wide workspace, 196 stitches, 10 buttonholes and an automatic thread cutter for both quilting and garments. If you want the same space with fewer stitches and less weight, the Skyline S3 AE is the alternative, and the MC6700P offers a bigger harp and dual feed.
