The Juki HZL-HT740 is a computerised machine built around thread trimming. It trims both the upper and lower threads automatically, with a button as well, and that focus on saving time and thread is what sets it apart in the thread cutter guide. A heavy duty metal frame, a stainless steel bed plate and a 6.4 inch sewing space make it a sturdy all-rounder.

Our take

Thread trimming explained

Juki describes an auto thread trimming function that trims upper and lower threads at the same time, plus a separate thread cutter button. Trimming both threads close to the fabric means less waste and no long tails to clip later. Over a big project, that adds up to noticeable time and thread savings.

Frame, bed and workspace

The interior frame is metal, which Juki says provides long-lasting durability. The arm surface is stainless steel, so fabric glides smoothly. The sewing space between the needle and the machine body is 6.4 inches, about 163 mm, generous enough for small quilts and home decor projects.

The spec table lists 7.6 kg, light for a metal-framed machine.

Everyday features

An automatic needle threader, adjustable stitch length and width, cool LED lighting and a free arm under a removable storage compartment are all listed. The colour-coded start/stop button shows green when ready or sewing, red when not ready, and orange during bobbin winding, a useful visual cue for beginners.

The listing does not give a stitch count.

The removable storage compartment holds feet and small tools, and sliding it off for the free arm is a quick job, so switching from flat seams to cuffs takes seconds.

Against the Juki HZL-G220 and Janome Skyline S6

The Juki HZL-G220 lists box feed, 180 stitches and 8 automatic buttonholes with a thread cutter. The Janome Skyline S6 has 196 stitches, a 9 mm width, auto tension and a thread cutter, but weighs 11.3 kg. The HT740 is the lightest of the three with the clearest trimming description.

The Pfaff Passport 3.0 combines a cutter with IDT dual feed.

Who should look elsewhere

If you need to know the number of stitches and buttonholes before you buy, this listing does not give them. Dressmakers working with slippery fabrics may prefer the Pfaff's dual feed.

Verdict

Buy the Juki HZL-HT740 if automatic trimming of both threads, a metal frame and a generous workspace in a light body are what you want. If a published stitch list and box feed matter, the Juki HZL-G220 is better documented, and for a 9 mm stitch width, the Janome Skyline S6.
