The Janome AirThread 2000D is for anyone who has given up on an overlocker because of the loopers. Its headline feature is one push air threading, which blows thread through the looper path instead of making you follow it by hand. Add lay-in threading for the needles and a built-in converter, and it becomes the easiest Janome overlocker to set up, judging by its listing.

In its favour

  • One push air threading takes the hardest step, looper threading, out of setup.
  • A built-in one step converter is listed, so the 2 thread stitches need no separate part.
  • An 8 piece feed dog system and adjustable foot pressure are stated.

Good to know

  • The listing does not mention differential feed or rolled hem settings, so confirm them.
  • It is the most expensive Janome overlocker here by a wide margin.

Our take

The threading system

Janome lists a one push air threading system, lay-in threading, colour coded thread guides and a threading chart. A needle threader is also named. In practice, air threading removes the step where most new overlocker owners struggle, and it makes switching thread colours far less of a chore. For anyone who sews with several colours of thread in a week, that time saving builds up.

A looper threading wire and needle holder are in the accessory list, along with screwdrivers, tweezers, a spanner, a needle set, spool caps, a lint brush, oil and a spare upper knife.

Stitches and feeding

It is 2, 3 and 4 thread convertible, and the one step converter for 2 thread work is built in, so there is no small part to lose. An 8 piece feed dog system and adjustable foot pressure are listed for steady feeding across fabric weights.

The listing does not mention differential feed or describe the rolled hem setting. Both are standard requirements on an overlocker for knits and fine edges, so confirm them with the seller.

Size and warranty terms

It weighs 7.89 kg and measures about 30 by 35.6 by 27.9 cm. The warranty text describes 25 years on mechanical parts, 2 years on electrical parts and 1 year on labour, and it is described as a limited warranty.

Where it sits in the Janome range

The Janome 9300DX lists differential feed, rolled hemming and around 1,500 stitches per minute, but not air threading or a 2 thread option. The Janome 8002D offers 2, 3 and 4 thread work with differential feed and an adjustable 3.1 to 7.3 mm cutting width, threaded with the help of a chart. The AirThread costs far more than either, and you pay mostly for the threading.

Verdict

Buy the AirThread 2000D if threading is what stops you using an overlocker, or if you change thread colours often. If you are happy to thread by hand and want stated differential feed and rolled hem for much less outlay, the Janome 9300DX or 8002D covers the essentials.
