The Janome Memory Craft MC1000 is a sewing and embroidery machine for people who want a full specification on both sides, not an embroidery unit bolted onto a basic sewing machine. Its listing is one of the most detailed on this site, and it shows a strong sewing side: 300 stitches, 15 one-step buttonhole styles, a 7 mm stitch width, an automatic thread cutter and start/stop.

In its favour
- Three hundred sewing stitches and 15 one-step buttonhole styles make it a capable sewing machine too.
- Upper thread and optical bobbin thread sensors are listed, warning you before you run out.
- Ten presser feet are listed, including quarter inch, blind hem, overedge and zipper feet.
Good to know
- A 140 by 140 mm field is mid sized; larger designs need splitting.
- Embroidery speed is listed at 660 stitches a minute, so big designs take time.
Our take
Embroidery specification
Janome lists 241 built-in designs and a maximum embroidery area of 140 x 140 mm, with one 140 x 140 mm hoop and template included. Fonts cover European, Japanese and Russian alphabets plus 2 and 3 letter monograms. Embroidery speed is 660 stitches per minute, and designs are imported through a USB host port, with 2.5 MB of built-in memory.
On-screen editing lets you combine patterns on a full colour touch screen measuring 70.1 x 52.6 mm.
Sewing specification
The sewing side lists 300 utility and decorative stitches, 5 mm maximum length and 7 mm width, an automatic one-step buttonhole with 15 styles, manual tension control, drop feed, twin needle capability and a sewing speed of 860 stitches per minute. The thread cutter trims upper and lower threads at a button press, and start/stop allows pedal-free sewing.
Upper and optical bobbin thread sensors warn when thread runs out, useful during a long embroidery.
Workspace and accessories
Janome gives 18 cm of space to the right of the needle and 11 cm of arm height. The machine converts from flat bed to free arm. The feet list is long: standard, automatic buttonhole, quarter inch seam, blind hem, two overedge feet, satin stitch, zipper and embroidery feet, plus a straight stitch needle plate, which improves straight seams on fine fabrics.
The approximate weight is 10 kg with dimensions of 432 mm wide, 301 mm high and 270 mm deep including the embroidery unit.
Against the SE9185 and bernette 79
The Singer SE9185 has a larger 5 x 7 inch field and mySewnet Wi-Fi, with over 250 stitches, but a much shorter listing. The bernette 79 has a 260 x 160 mm field and 500 stitches. The MC1000's square hoop is smaller than both, so it suits monograms and medium motifs rather than large panels.
Who it does not suit
Anyone wanting wireless design transfer will need to use USB instead. If big embroidery designs are your main goal, a larger hoop machine is the better investment.
Verdict
Buy the Janome MC1000 if you want a properly specified sewing machine with a capable embroidery unit, thread cutter and 15 buttonhole styles. If a larger hoop and Wi-Fi matter more, the Singer SE9185 is the alternative, and the bernette 79 suits anyone who wants the biggest field in this group.
