The Janome Memory Craft 100E is an embroidery-only machine for beginners who want a large built-in design library and plenty of on-screen editing without connecting a computer. Its 274 inline designs are the most of any beginner embroidery machine on this site, and the square 5.5 x 5.5 inch field suits monograms, badges and centred motifs especially well.

Our take

Field size and design library

Janome lists a maximum embroidery size of 5.5 by 5.5 inches, about 140 x 140 mm. A square field is particularly handy for circular designs, quilt block motifs and logos that are roughly as tall as they are wide.

The 274 designs come with 11 embroidery supplies mentioned in the first bullet, though the listing does not explain what those supplies are.

Editing on the machine

The edit list is generous: resize, rotate, match, duplicate, flip, arc, group, zoom, user colour choice and single colour stitching. Arc lets you curve lettering around a motif, and single colour stitching lets you sew a multi-colour design in one thread, which saves time on simple projects.

All of this happens on a 3.5 inch colour touch screen with a stylus, which helps with precise taps on a small display.

Convenience and speed

Embroidery speed runs from 400 to 660 stitches per minute according to the listing. The machine cuts jump threads automatically and returns to the right point after a thread break, two features that save a lot of picking and restarting on longer designs. A top needle threader and two LED lights are listed.

Free arm embroidery is possible with optional accessories, which is useful for sleeves and bag panels later on.

Warranty, size and gaps

The spec table quotes a 25 year limited warranty on mechanical parts, 2 years on electrical parts and 1 year on labour. The machine weighs 9.1 kg and measures about 43 cm wide. The listing does not state how designs are transferred, so if you plan to buy files online, confirm whether USB or another method is supported.

How it compares

The Brother PE900 has a longer 5 x 7 inch hoop and wireless LAN, but fewer built-in designs at 193. The Brother Innov-is F540E adds sewing to a 180 x 130 mm field with wireless transfer. The MC100E stands out for its library and editing tools rather than connectivity.

Verdict

Buy the Janome MC100E if you want an embroidery-only machine with a big built-in library, strong on-screen editing and a square field. If you plan to download lots of designs and want wireless transfer, the Brother PE900 is the better match, and if you want to sew as well, the Brother Innov-is F540E.
