Our take
What Brother lists
The bullets give 40 built-in stitches from basic to decorative, a wide table extension, an LCD display with backlit screen, speed control, an automatic needle threader, automatic bobbin winding, a drop-in bobbin, drop feed and a 1-step buttonhole. Included feet are zigzag, buttonhole, zipper, blind stitch and monogramming, among others.
The spec table lists 5.9 kg and Vietnam as country of origin.
The wide table
A wide table slides onto the free arm and extends the flat bed. It supports quilt blocks, curtain hems and larger garments, so their weight does not pull the fabric off line. When you need the free arm for a sleeve, you simply remove it.
Beginner-friendly features
Speed control lets you set a gentle pace while learning, and the automatic needle threader saves frustration. The 1-step buttonhole is sized by the machine. Drop feed opens up free motion quilting and embroidery later on, using the monogramming or darning foot.
The monogramming foot is a nice inclusion for a machine at this level. It has a channel underneath that lets dense satin and decorative stitches pass through without catching, so letters and borders sewn with the built-in stitches come out cleaner.
Within Brother's FS range
The Brother FS100WT moves up to 100 stitches, adds start/stop and includes a free motion foot and hard case at 7.5 kg. The FS200CE has 200 stitches, 8 one-step buttonholes and a walking foot. The FS40WTS is the lightest of the three and covers the basics.
Outside the FS range, the Brother SH40 also has 40 stitches with start/stop at 4.5 kg.
Who should look elsewhere
There is no start/stop button listed, so beginners who want to sew without the pedal should look at the SH40 or FS100WT. Those who need a walking foot for quilting should consider the FS200CE.
Verdict
Pick the Brother FS40WTS if you want a light, simple computerised machine with a wide table, speed control and a 1-step buttonhole. If you want start/stop and a free motion foot, the Brother FS100WT is the step up, and for a walking foot and more stitches, the Brother FS200CE.
