The Brother Innov-is M380D combines a capable sewing machine with a beginner embroidery unit, and it is aimed squarely at families and hobbyists who want to personalise clothes and gifts. What sets it apart is the built-in Disney content: 65 of its 200 embroidery designs are Disney motifs, and it connects to the Artspira app over wireless LAN for more creative options.

Our take
Embroidery: hoop, designs and fonts
The embroidery area is 100 x 100 mm, the classic 4 x 4 inch size. It is right for names on school bags, small motifs on T-shirt chests and patches, but larger designs need a bigger machine. Brother lists 200 built-in designs and 11 embroidery fonts.
Sewing side
The sewing specification is strong for a combination machine: 181 stitches including 10 buttonholes, plus 4 lettering fonts for sewn text. My Custom Stitch lets you design your own decorative stitches. An advanced needle threader is listed, and a colour touchscreen handles both modes.
That means the M380D can stand in as your main sewing machine, not just an embroidery add-on.
Wireless and the Artspira app
Wireless LAN connection and the Artspira creative app let you send designs from a phone or tablet to the machine. For people who do most of their browsing and editing on a phone, this is more convenient than saving files to a USB stick.
Size and practical points
The spec table gives 10.9 kg and an ABS plastic body, with a grey finish. The listed dimensions look like the box rather than the machine. Allow space behind and to the side of the machine for the embroidery arm to move.
The listing does not say whether a thread cutter, speed slider or knee lifter are included.
Because the machine switches between sewing and embroidery, plan where it will live. Leaving the embroidery unit attached takes up more table space, so many owners store it in its box between projects.
Against the F540E and SE9180
The Brother Innov-is F540E offers a much larger 180 x 130 mm field with wireless transfer, a better choice if hoop size matters more than Disney content. The Singer SE9180 has a 170 x 100 mm hoop, a 7 inch screen and a stated thread cutter at 7.03 kg. Both let you embroider bigger designs than the M380D.
Verdict
Choose the Brother Innov-is M380D if you want one machine for everyday sewing and small embroidery, and the Disney designs and Artspira app appeal. If you need a larger hoop, the Brother Innov-is F540E or Singer SE9180 will suit you better, and for embroidery only, the Brother PE900.
