The Singer Smart Heavy Duty 9120 combines the heavy duty idea of a metal frame and strong piercing power with app based control. It is for sewists who tackle denim, canvas and layered fabrics but also want guided help and a large stitch library on their phone or tablet. Its defining trait is that most stitches live in the app rather than on the machine.

Our take

How the app approach works

Built into the machine is a straight stitch. Another 200 or more stitches, covering utility, stretch, decorative, lettering and buttonhole uses, come through the CREATIVATE app, which also recommends stitch settings and presser feet based on fabric. The app adds guided learning and project support.

This means a mobile device becomes part of the setup. If you prefer turning a dial or pressing a button on the machine, that is worth thinking about before buying.

Heavy duty credentials

Singer states strong piercing power for thick fabrics and layered materials, plus a full metal interior frame for stability. Speed control and a start and stop button help on corners, curves and slow passes over a jeans hem. Stitch width reaches 7 mm with up to 29 needle positions, and stitch length goes to 4.5 mm.

The Drop and Sew bobbin system skips the manual bobbin thread pickup, and a needle threader is included. The machine weighs 8.26 kg and measures about 20 by 43 by 30 cm.

In the box and optional extras

Included feet are all purpose, decorative stitch, zipper, blind hem and one step buttonhole, alongside Class 15 bobbins, needles and basic tools. An embroidery attachment is sold separately, supporting an optional hoop up to 170 by 100 mm. Presser foot lift and top speed are not stated.

How it compares for denim

The Singer 6335M Denim keeps its 32 stitches on the machine and is sold specifically for thick layers and denim, so it suits those who want no app at all. The Brother HF27 lists a J foot with levelling button and a non stick foot for leather and PVC, practical aids for jeans and bags. The 9120 is the most flexible of the three, provided you are comfortable with app control.

Verdict

Pick the Singer 9120 if you sew heavy fabrics, like the idea of an app that suggests settings, and may add embroidery later. If you want every stitch on the machine itself, the Singer 6335M Denim is simpler. For hemming jeans with a levelling foot in the box, the Brother HF27 is the practical alternative.
