The Brother PE900 is an embroidery-only machine for beginners who want to start with a usefully large hoop and send designs from a computer or phone without USB sticks. The wireless LAN connection is its distinguishing feature in the beginner group, and this bundle adds the supplies you need to stitch out a first design straight away: 80 spools of thread, needles, pre-wound bobbins and stabiliser.

In its favour

  • A 5 by 7 inch field is large enough for cushion fronts, tote bags and bigger motifs.
  • Wireless LAN lets you send designs from a computer or mobile device without a USB stick.
  • The bundle includes 80 spools of thread, 100 embroidery needles, pre-wound bobbins and stabiliser.

Good to know

  • It is embroidery only, so you still need a separate sewing machine.
  • The listing does not state the voltage, so confirm it is a UK version.

Our take

Hoop size and built-in content

The 5 x 7 inch hoop (about 130 x 180 mm) suits chest logos, tea towels, cushion panels and most children's clothing motifs. A 4 x 4 inch hoop is the common entry size, so the PE900 gives you noticeably more room before you need to split a design.

Brother lists 193 built-in designs and 13 embroidery fonts, enough for monograms and names without buying extra files.

Wireless LAN and the touch screen

Wireless transfer lets you move designs from a computer or mobile device over your home network. That removes a step compared with saving to a USB stick and walking it to the machine. Navigation and editing happen on a 3.7 inch LCD touch screen.

What the bundle includes

The bundle lists 80 spools of polyester embroidery thread at 500 m each, 100 Brother 75/11 embroidery needles, a 10-pack of pre-wound bobbins and a roll of lightweight water soluble stabiliser. Stabiliser is easy to forget and essential, so having a roll is useful. You will want other stabiliser types for knits and towels later.

Size and limits

The spec table lists 15.5 kg, likely including the bundle, and dimensions of about 38.9 cm wide. This machine embroiders only, so you will still need a sewing machine for construction.

Compared with the Janome MC100E, which lists 274 designs in a 140 x 140 mm field, the PE900 trades some built-in designs for a longer hoop and wireless transfer. The Singer SE9180 also has Wi-Fi and a 7 inch touch screen, and it sews as well as embroiders.

Who should look elsewhere

Anyone hoping to sew garments on the same machine should note that the PE900 has no sewing stitches at all. If you mainly want small monograms on towels and napkins, a 4 x 4 inch machine would also do the job, and the extra hoop length matters less.

Verdict

Buy the Brother PE900 bundle if you want an embroidery-only machine with a 5 x 7 inch hoop, wireless design transfer and supplies to start immediately. If you want one machine that sews too, the Singer SE9180 or Brother Innov-is M380D suit you better, and the Janome MC100E offers more built-in designs.
