  • Best overall

Janome HD3000BE: metal body plus quilting kit

At 9.53 kg with a metal body it stays steady over thick seams and bulky bags.

  • Best value

Singer 4411: metal frame, 1,100 stitches a minute

A 1,100 stitches a minute top speed is the highest stated in this guide.

  • Most features

Brother HF27: non stick foot for leather and PVC

A non stick foot for leather and PVC comes in the box, so you can start on vinyl straight away.

Heavy duty usually means a metal frame, a stronger motor and a higher presser foot lift, so the needle can push through denim seams, canvas bags and upholstery without stalling or flexing. It does not turn a domestic machine into an industrial one. Thin garment leather and a few layers of vinyl are realistic with a leather needle and a non stick or walking foot; thick belt leather and saddlery are not. Weight is a good clue: a heavier machine stays planted when the needle hits a jeans side seam. This guide compares seven machines on frame, stitch count, buttonhole type, top speed and weight, using only what each listing states. Whichever you choose, fit the right needle (a 100/16 or 110/18 denim needle for jeans) before blaming the machine.
